In Ontario, Special Constables are considered sworn Peace Officers who take the same oath of office as a Police Officer and are granted all or some of the authorities of a police officer depending on how their roles are defined. While the Police Services Act of Ontario permits Special Constables to obtain the same powers as police constables, specific powers, territorial jurisdictions, and responsibilities are outlined within the terms of the individual appointment.
Special Constables are employed in a number of agencies. Some work for Police services, Ministries, and agencies throughout the provincial government as well as the federal government, conservation authorities, universities, and crown corporations. Currently, there are approximately more than 3,000 Special Constables in Ontario, each of which are appointed to different agencies.
1. Public transit.
2. University campuses.
3. Community housing.
4. Police services employ Special Constables in various roles including court security, scenes of crime examination, community engagement and prisoner transportation.
5. Government security services.
Special Constables play a vital role in keeping Ontario safe. Special constables are employed to preserve the peace and keep their respected communities safe.
Special Constables are conferred authorities to enforce multiple sections of the Criminal code of Canada and provincial acts. Special Constables have police officer authorities for the Mental Health Act, Trespass to Property Act, Liquor License Act, Safe Streets Act, etc…
